Conversations with Strangers
2022Conversations with Strangers is a series of interactions, some virtual, some in person, between myself and people I do not know. These encounters are transcribed and restructured into scripts, thus stripping them of their original context and presenting them as staged dialogue. This script format foregrounds the inherent mediation of lived experience: to exist is to perform, often unconsciously, within cultural and historical scripts we are subjected to, as opposed to subjects of.
By staging the unstaged, the work exposes the curation, persona, and performance embedded in every exchange. The series engages with questions about authorship, memory, and control: What gets preserved? Whose version survives? And how do we become legible, both to others and to ourselves, within systems that script our subjectivity?”
