The Phenomenon of Phenomenology
2023
Identity is unstable, constructed, and socially policed. Subjectivity emerges through the tension between internal experience and external reception. It is produced and perceived through acts of presentation that are read, categorized, and regulated according to social and cultural codes.
The Phenomenon of Phenomenology interrogates this instability through the performative adoption of multiple identities via changes in outward appearance. The work explores how the presentation of a form becomes legible as identity through repetition, gesture, and performance. It considers how visibility and recognition are mediated by cultural scripts, and how the performance of self can both expose and obscure the subject beneath.
